Many people may view the golden years as a time to slow down and take a break from life, but there are some who take advantage of their seasoned age and choose to thrive. Below is the story of Miss Norma and her final cross-country journey that has inspired seniors and their Cincinnati, OH, live-in caregivers.
Miss Norma, a 90-year-old woman from Northern Michigan, was diagnosed with uterine cancer just two days after her husband of 67 years passed away from another kind of cancer. Doctors recommended surgery and chemotherapy to treat the disease, but the nonagenarian decided to make the most of her life and forego the removal of the mass on her uterus, which was cancerous. Although the disease can often be cured, she chose to enjoy the last part of her life and avoid the discomfort that would come with treatment. Instead, she chose to embark on a cross-country trip across the United States with the full support of her family. Her doctor admitted she had a great idea and encouraged her to enjoy her trip.
A Driving Miss Norma Facebook page was created to chronicle the travels of the woman as she made stops at the Grand Canyon, Roswell, and Mount Rushmore while learning more about the country. The page currently has over 66,000 followers as fans stayed updated on each place she visited. She was in good company during her travels and took the road trip with her son Ted and daughter-in-law Ramie, along with her poodle Ringo, who was always by her side. They also traveled to Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida.
Norma wanted to use the opportunity to inspire other individuals to enjoy an adventure at the end of their lives while also prompting other families to talk more about end-of-life plans. “Everyone has different ideas about how they want the end of their life to work,” said Ramie. “As a planet, we need to have this conversation.”
